What are CPV codes?

The Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) is a standard classification system for public procurement. Originally developed by the EU, it is still used on UK notices published to Find a Tender and Contracts Finder. Every notice carries at least one CPV code describing what is being bought, from construction work to IT services to medical equipment.

Codes are hierarchical: the first two digits of the eight-digit code identify a division (such as 45 for construction work), and the remaining digits narrow it down through groups, classes, and categories. Browsing by division is often the quickest way to find relevant tenders, because it surfaces every contract in your sector regardless of the keywords a buyer chose for the notice title or description.
