Wemyss Metal Mine Works

These works will be delivered as part of the Wales Metal Mine Programme (WMMP) between NRW and the Mining Remediation Authority.

This programme supports the Western Wales River Basin Management Plan (Western Wales River Basin Management Plan 2021 – 2027 which was published as a final plan in July 2022 (specifically measures CYM49 - Deliver metal (non-coal) mine water programme as identified under the Metal Mine Strategy for Wales and WW0031 - Continue to investigate mine water impact and develop remediation plans in accordance with the Metal Mines Strategy for Wales).

This plan has a statutory function associated with the Water Framework Directive (The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017).

Works – Summer 2027

• Introduction of an Upper Storage/Attenuation Pond to reduce flows into Upper Mill Race Stream. This will include increasing the existing bund height and installing flow control infrastructure. Approx length 90 metres and approx. height 1.5 metres.

• Bypass the circular collapse feature east of Glanville’s Shaft with new open channel.

• Introduction of highway drainage system and filter drain to avoid runoff finding its way into the main spoil tip.

• A new lined water channel with flow monitors from the public highway to the Nant Cwmnewydion, construing a new ford crossing and improving the existing ford crossing. Approx. length 95 metres.
